Former Western Hockey League star defenseman Stefan Elliott will be in the lineup when the Avalanche host the Edmonton Oilers tonight at the Pepsi Center. Elliott, who was called up from Lake Erie last night, will play in a six-man D corps. Matt Hunwick will be scratched. Elliott, 20, could be exactly what the Avalanche

Philip Rivers has not been a thorn in the Broncos' side. He hasn't been a rock in their collective shoes, sand under their eyelids. No, Rivers has been a full-fledged, knee-buckling, stomach-churning migraine for Denver. While the list of what has troubled the Broncos in recent years is long, the one constant has been the team's troubles against San Diego — and Rivers.

Which Philip Rivers will the Broncos see today at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego? There's the Philip Rivers who is 9-2 against Denver, with the Chargers scoring at least 30 points in seven of those wins. And there's the Philip Rivers who leads the NFL in interceptions this season with 17. Rivers has had seven games with at least two in- terceptions. Look for the Broncos to turn up the heat on Rivers, who has a patchwork offensive line, in the hope that his mistakes will continue.

Julia Mancuso of Squaw Valley, Calif., captured the first World Cup podium for American racer here since 2004, finishing third today in a giant slalom won by Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany. Elisabeth Goergl of Austria was second.
