Best Bets for The Weekend: Denver's Eco music fest; John Lithgow, behind the scenes at the DCPA and more

Denver's Eco music fest; John Lithgow, behind the scenes at the DCPA and more

Follow the green brick road to eco music fest

Saturday. Denver's RiNo arts district will welcome back the sustainability-minded Green Route Festival this weekend. Formerly known as Green Spaces Colorado, Green Route publishes a Denver map directing people to local businesses that put the environment first, and their "Eco Music Festival" is one giant party in service of that goal. The event features more than 70 environmentally friendly vendors, bee keepers, fire dancers, live painters, a farmer's market, local food and drink and, of course, some of the city's most noteworthy musical acts, including the Swayback, the Pirate Signal, Flashlights, Boulder Acoustic Society (pictured), Common Ties, Fingers of the Sun and DJ Cavem Moetavation. Noon-11 p.m. Saturday, 26th and Blake streets. $15-$20. 303-720-6850 or greenroute.com.

Rock the Range brings the Gospel message

Saturday-Sunday. It's rare for a music festival's website to include a tab, "How To Know Jesus," but this weekend's Rock the Range event is that kind of party. Organizers are calling it "great music and a gospel message," and the bands fit that theme. Saturday's acts include Skillet, Lecrae, the Afters and the Almost. Sunday's bill features Michael W. Smith. The event starts at 4 p.m. each day, and it's produced by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Graham's son, Franklin Graham, will speak each day at the festival. More info: www.billygraham.org/rocktherange, where the concert will also be streamed from.

John Lithgow stars in "Stories by Heart"

Sunday. The pop culture renown of fine actors is rarely the extent of their skills, and John Lithgow is a prime example. Best known as a character actor in films like "Terms of Endearment" and as the lead in NBC's "Third Rock from the Sun," Lithgow is also a respected thespian with the Emmy- and Tony Award-winning credentials to match. That makes his one-man memoir show, "Stories by Heart," a cut above the average ego-fest. Billed as the inaugural production by the LOCAL Theatre Company, the piece will visit a range of characters on its way toward emphasizing the importance of narrative in Lithgow's life and career. 7 p.m. Sunday. Chautauqua Auditorium, 900 Baseline Rd. in Boulder. $41.50-$81.50. 303-442-3282 or chautauqua.com.

Documentary shows Ozzy's even darker side

If the celebrated reality TV show "The Osbournes" represented the lighter side of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, then perhaps the new documentary "God Bless Ozzy Osbourne" will show us the even darker side of the Prince of Darkness. Osbourne's son, Jack, produced the documentary, which will be screened in eight theaters in the metro area (including the Denver Pavilions, the AMC 24s in Westminster and Highlands Ranch and others) at 7:30 on Monday night. The trailer paints Papa Osbourne as a deadbeat father in his early parental years and as a forgetful mess in his modern form. Then again, are we really surprised that he never tucked in his kids and that he still doesn't remember their birthdays? Check fathomevents.com for a full list of participating theaters.
