The latest from John Davidson's Denver Post pet blog

Fourteen horses in Huerfano County were slowly starving to death, their owner himself dying of a terminal illness and unable to care for them. Forty-two dogs at a rambling Bent County property survived with little medical care, some forced to live miserable lives out in the open. These are the type of stories that break the hearts of animal lovers. Today, they are part of the modern-day case file of an organization founded 130 years ago, the Colorado Humane Society & SPCA. Tips from the Experts

Evacuation plan for pets

Emergencies may require that you leave your home. Do not leave your pets behind. Remember, if it isn't safe for you, it isn't safe for your pets. Arrange a safe haven for your pets in the event of evacuation. Here is a list of things to do as part of your pet preparedness plan:

• Contact your veterinarian for a list of preferred boarding kennels and facilities.
• Ask your local animal shelter if they provide emergency shelter or foster care for pets.
• Identify hotels or motels outside of your immediate area that accept pets.
• Ask friends and relatives outside your immediate area if they would be willing to take in your pet.

Adoptable pets from the
Dumb Friends League

"Hello, my name is Monica and I am a stunning, 2-year-old, spayed female, long-hair mix cat. I'm a friendly girl who likes adults and older children. I am declawed and would love a home with a sunny spot for me to lounge in. Please come meet me to see if I can be your purr-fect pet. Best of all – during the month of September, adoption fees for cats over 1 year old like me, are waived. I am at the Dumb Friends League, 2080 S. Quebec Street, Denver. My ID# is A0595082."
