Afternoon Headlines: 12 percent of automated wildfire notification calls malfunctioned



Some Colorado wildfire evacuees allowed to return to homes, effective immediately
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office announced at a noon news conference that some residents of the area evacuated because of the Lower North Fork Fire will be allowed to go back to their homes today. If residents are forced to evacuate again, a Jefferson County Sheriff's vehicle will drive through the area with lights and sirens in addition to reverse emergency notifications.

Best Buy to close 50 stores, but has not yet specified which locations
Best Buy Co. said it plans to close 50 big box stores and open 100 small mobile locations in the U.S. in fiscal 2013 and cut $800 million in costs by fiscal 2015. The news came Thursday as the biggest U.S. specialty electronics retailer posted a fiscal fourth quarter loss partly due to restructuring charges, but its adjusted results topped Wall Street's expectations.

U.S. jobless claims fall to lowest level in 4 years

Bill to drug test welfare recipients dies in Colorado House in second reading
A bill to require welfare recipients to take drug tests in order to get benefits died in the state House today in the face of apparent bipartisan opposition. House Bill 1046, sponsored by Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg, R-Sterling, would have required anyone applying for benefits under the federally funded Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program, or TANF, to first pay the $45 cost of taking a drug test.

State Rep. Laura Bradford, who made headlines for two weeks earlier this session because a DUI traffic stop, announced today she will not seek re-election in November.
