LOS ANGELES—The manslaughter trial against Michael Jackson's doctor begins its second week Monday with prosecutors furthering their examination of an emergency room physician who gave paramedics permission to pronounce the pop superstar dead in the bedroom of his home.

Coming across the finish line of the 2011 Country Music Half-Marathon in Nashville in late April, I looked at down at my watch for the final time. My time was 2 hours, 3 minutes and change, which was nearly 13 minutes slower than my half-marathon personal best — or, put another way, almost a minute slower per mile.

"Assassins" takes aim, but from too far a distance
Theater review: The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center's season-opening "Assassins" should reassure anyone that new producing artistic director Scott RC Levy will not shy from controversial and potentially disturbing musical titles. You know, the best kind. But size here works against one of the state's best presenters of big Broadway musicals. Rating: **1/2
